Sanitary Sewer

Overview

The City has almost 130 miles of sanitary sewer lines. Most of them are in the street; however, some run through utility easements in difficult-to-access areas. Each year the Utility Department cleans approximately one-third of the city’s sanitary sewer mains. Lines requiring a higher level of maintenance are cleaned quarterly. This routine maintenance helps to prevent blockages and backups.

The Utility Department is responsible to inspect and maintain the collection system infrastructure and the sanitary lift stations, and ensure uninterrupted collection of wastewater.

Sanitary sewer disposal needs are served by the Environmental Services Division of the Metropolitan Council (MCES). Chanhassen’s wastewater is treated by MCES Blue Lake Wastewater Plant in Shakopee.
