The Chanhassen Fire Department requires a permit for any open fire that exceeds 3 feet by 3 feet and is not classified as a recreational fire (see Recreational Fire Requirements link below). Permits are required year round. Allow at least two (2) business days for processing after permit is submitted. Permits are only valid for up to 14 days and open burning is allowed only during that time. There is no fee for this permit. The application below provides detail on open burning permit requirements. To check for current burning restrictions, please go to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website linked below.
Don Nutter, Fire Marshal (952) 227-1151 or (612) 268-8515 (cell)
The Carver County Fire Chiefs Association has modified how they view “smoke in the area” calls. Effective January 1, 2015, if a call comes in to the Carver County Dispatch Center for “smoke in the area,” the Chanhassen Fire Department will be called to respond. What this means to you is that during the course of your burn the Fire Department may be called out through no fault of your own. Please have your permit readily available for a Sheriff’s Deputy or Fire Department Officer to review. As long as everything appears in order, you will be allowed to continue to burn. If you have any questions, contact Fire Marshal Don Nutter by phone at 952-227-1151 or 612-268-8515 (cell), or by email.
