Animal Licenses
The City of Chanhassen's animal ordinance includes rules concerning dogs and cats and several other regulations related to keeping animals in Chanhassen. The following is a summary of items that are typically of greatest concern to pet owners.

Licensing
As of January, 2011, the City of Chanhassen will no longer require that dogs or cats be licensed, but both cats and dogs are encouraged to wear some type of identifier. The identification can be a microchip or a tag with the owner's phone number or address. The benefit of identifying your pet is that you can be located if your animal is found running at large. Those animals without identification will be impounded, and payment of fees and penalties will be required prior to the return of your pet. Dogs and cats are required to be vaccinated against rabies. For more information, call 952-227-1100.
Kennel Permits
As defined in the Chanhassen City Code, any person who owns more than two (2) dogs, or any combination of four (4) dogs and/or cats, is required to obtain a kennel permit. This ordinance also pertains to indoor pets.
A kennel permit costs $25, plus the regular license fee for each animal, and must be renewed annually on January 1. Once an application for a kennel license is received, our Community Service Officer will conduct an inspection of the property to review the animals' living conditions to ensure that they are well cared for. Additionally, the city will place an ad in the Chanhassen Villager announcing that an application has been received and that residents have ten days to comment on the request. If the inspection is approved and no comments are received from the public, the license is automatically granted. If negative comments are received from the public, the City Council will review the matter at a regular meeting and determine if the license will be issued.
To apply, download the appropriate Kennel Permit application form (Commerical or Non-Commercial), fill it out and mail or drop it off at City Hall, 7700 Market Boulevard, P.O. Box 147, Chanhassen, MN 55317 along with the $25 fee. For more information, call 952-227-1100.
Leash Laws
No dog or cat may run at large in the city. Pets must be under restraint at all times when off the owner's property. To report a stray animal, or if you've lost your pet, contact Animal Control at 952-227-1607 during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On weekends and after hours, call the Carver County Sheriff's Department at 952-361-1231. If your pet is lost, you may also contact the Chanhassen Veterinary Clinic at 952-934-8862 to see if the animal is there. City Code also requires persons walking a dog or cat in the city to carry equipment for feces removal and disposal.
Barking Dogs
Dogs are prohibited from barking excessively. What does that mean? Generally, on again/off again barking that occurs regularly during the day or evening is excessive, as is non-stop barking that exceeds three to five minutes. If you’re the “victim” of a neighbor's barking dog, try talking with the owner before calling in a complaint. A friendly chat may quickly resolve the problem on neighborly terms. If a complaint is necessary, please call Animal Control at 952-227-1607.
No Pets in Parks
City Code prohibits pets from being in Chanhassen's community parks and neighborhood parks, except for those leashed on trails that pass through parks. This does not apply to properly harnessed or leashed service animals, from a recognized service animal training program, assisting blind or deaf persons or persons with physical or sensory disabilities.
