  • Did you know that there is a Minnesota Scientific and Natural Area (SNA) in Chanhassen?
  • Do you know what a calcareous fen is?
  • Want to come and experience it for yourself?
Join us for a tour of rare wetland wildflowers at the Seminary Fen SNA.  This DNR-owned land features some of the best calcareous fen in the metro area.  The fen supports rare plants species that can thrive in saturated soil rich in calcium and magnesium.  Tour highlights will include blooms of grass-of-parnassus, brook lobelia, fringed gentian, cut-leaf water parsnip, turtlehead, sunflowers, and several species of goldenrods and asters. To find out more about these unique environments, read the DNR fact sheet on calcareous fens.

DNR staff will lead the tour through the fen property. All ages are welcome, but the site is undeveloped and good mobility is needed since the tour will include walking on uneven ground, including quaking peat.

The Seminary Fen Scientific and Natural Area is located on the north side of Flying Cloud Drive (CR 61) approximately 1/2 mile west of Bluff Creek Drive. Seminary Fen Location Map
