Park & Recreation Department Overview & Mission

The quality and number of recreational facilities in a community directly contributes to our quality of life! For this reason, the City of Chanhassen places a strong emphasis on parks, open space, trails and recreation.

Residents take pride in their City park system offering 34 community, neighborhood and open space preserve locations. The plan is to provide a park within a half-mile of every resident’s front door. With the exception of some of our more rural areas, this goal has been attained.

Trails are the No. 1 requested recreation amenity in the country and Chanhassen is no exception. Currently over 55 miles of multi-purpose trails are available to residents with more on the way! Trails are a “close to home” recreation service that accommodates a variety of users. Make trails a part of your life by taking a brisk walk three times a week. The benefits are immediate and can be life changing.

The Chanhassen Recreation Center is your home away from home for recreation and fun. No Membership Fees! Residents may visit the fitness room or open gym for just $2.50 (non-residents pay $3). Check out YMCA programs and camps, personal training services, dance, tae kwon do, yoga, or one of the many other programs.

Located on the lower level of city hall, the senior center offers a welcoming environment where the coffee is always on. Recreation programs, congregate dining, senior clubs (including women’s and men’s), cards and woodcarving are weekly favorites. Take time to visit the center and you will discover one of Chanhassen’s most popular destinations!

Our residents love the sense of “hometown” appeal that Chanhassen offers. The key to this image – our Community Special Events! The City’s Annual 4th of July celebration is the grandest of them all, drawing big crowds to Lake Ann Park and downtown. Other events include February Festival, the Spring Candy Hunt, Dave Huffman Memorial Fun Run, and Halloween Party. Plan to attend all of these events, we promise you will not be disappointed!

“Rec” programs are staples of any Park and Recreation Department and that includes Chanhassen! Dozens of new programs are offered each quarter for every age and interest. Our philosophy is simple – provide top quality programs at great locations at reasonable prices. We accomplish this by hiring competent staff and creating strong partnerships with independent contactors.

For over 30 years Chanhassen parent volunteers (coordinated by youth sports associations) have coached kids. These organizations provide an invaluable service to the community. Children’s play is essential to the human development process; but please remember that volunteer participation in these programs is mandatory in order for them to be successful.

The Chanhassen Skate Park is the single most successful recreation amenity for youth ever developed in the City. Dollar for dollar, there is no other investment realizing a greater return. The park is located adjacent to City Hall on a 100’ x 200’ asphalt pad. Apparatus includes a wedge, quarter pipe, hotbox, spine, grind rails and half pipe. Skateboards and in-line skates are welcome, but bikes are not permitted.

Chanhassen offers many skating options within its park system. There are currently four outdoor hockey rinks and four pleasure skating rinks with warming house facilities available.

If summer or fall softball or basketball is your thing, check out the adult sport leagues coordinated by the department. Enjoying summer evenings at the Lake Ann Park ball fields and curing cabin fever at the Recreation Center gyms are great recreation activities!

Two of the best beaches in the metropolitan area are located in Chanhassen! Lake Ann Park and Lake Minnewashta Park offer large beaches with clean sand and clean water. If you have not visited the beach lately – pack a picnic basket and “hit the beach.”

Lake Susan Park offers a small beach near the picnic shelter. Neighborhood beaches are also maintained at Carver Beach, Greenwood Shores, and Roundhouse Park.

Lake Ann Park, Lake Susan Park and Lake Minnewashta Regional Park offer exciting group picnic opportunities. Learn more about Lake Ann and Lake Susan through this site or by calling 952-227-1121. For information on Lake Minnewashta, contact Carver County Parks at 952-466-5250.

The City of Chanhassen supports the needs and principles of allowing memorials in parks and green space areas, but is also mindful that these facilities have many uses and are enjoyed by a wide range of people. Learn more about the Memorial Giving Policy through this site of contact Todd Hoffman, Parks & Recreation Director at 952-227-1129 or by email at thoffman@ci.chanhassen.mn.us.

Park & Recreation Volunteer and Service Awards are provided by the City of Chanhassen to recognize individuals, businesses, community groups or school groups for their contributions to the community. These awards are designed not only to recognize achievement, but also to enhance the lives of our citizens through giving of themselves.
