Animal Control

The City of Chanhassen issues animal licenses and enforces animal control laws. The Community Service Officers are responsible for all animal-related issues within the city. They also respond to animal complaints and may issue citations for violations to animal ordinances. A number of links below will help answer some of your questions, and also provide contact information for filing a complaint. Animal licensing questions can be answered either by clicking HERE or by calling 952-227-1100. For most animal complaints contact Carver County Sheriff's Office at 952-361-1231 and appropriate personnel will be dispatched. For other animal-related questions, call 952-227-1607.

Animal Complaints

  • Noise: Excessive animal noise is prohibited. Call the Carver County Sheriff's Department at 952-361-1231 to report a noise problem. If a Community Service Officer is not available, a deputy may respond.

  • Dogs & Cats at Large: No dog or cat may run at-large in the city. Call the Carver County Sheriff's Disptach at 952-361-1231 to report an at-large animal and they will dispatch the appropriate personnel.
  • Bites & Aggressive Animals: All animal bites and aggressive behavior should be reported by call 911, and appropriate action will be taken.
  • Cruelty to Animals: Community Service Officers enforce state and local cruelty laws. Call 911 if you witness cruelty to an animal.

Animal Impound Location

  • Chanhassen Veterinary Clinic is the primary impound for the City of Chanhassen. They are located at 440 West 79th Street, Chanhassen, MN 55317. They can be contacted at 952-934-8862.

Chanhassen Dog & Cat Ordinances

The City of Chanhassen would like to thank you for licensing your pet. The following ordinances pertain to pets in the City of Chanhassen. Please follow the ordinances carefully and call a Chanhassen Community Service Officer at (952) 227-1607 if you have any questions.

  • Ordinance #5-51. Required. No owner shall keep a dog or cat within the city without a license issued by the city.

  • Ordinance #5-19. Running at large. No dog or cat shall be allowed by its owner to run at large. The police or animal control officers of the city shall take up and impound any dog or cat found in violation of this section.

  • Ordinance #5-22. Waste Clean-up. The owner or a person in control of a dog shall immediately remove any feces left by the dog not on property of the dog owner or the person in control of the dog. A person walking a dog off the owner's property must have in their possession equipment for picking up and removing feces.

  • Ordinance #13-50(j). Barking Dog/Nuisance Animal. No person owning, operating, having charge of, or occupying any building or premise shall keep or allow to be kept one or more animals that unreasonably disturbs the comfort or repose of any person by its frequent or continued noise (typically, any dog that barks unprovoked for a period of five minutes or longer is considered a nuisance).

  • Ordinance #5-18. Kennel Permit Required. No more then two dogs or a combination of four dogs or cats over the age of six months shall be kept on any premise in the city without securing a permit from the city council. For more information call the administration office at (952) 227-1100.

  • Ordinance #14-65. Animal Prohibited From City Parks. No person shall be permitted to take any animal, including but not limited to dogs and cats, into a park. Walking leashed dogs is allowed on city trails and streets, except in public beach areas.

  • Ordinance #5-17. Interference with Enforcement. It shall be unlawful for any person to break open the pound or to attempt to do so, or to take or let out any dog or cat therefrom, or to take or attempt to take from any officer any dog or cat taken up by him in compliance with this article, or in any manner to interfere with or hinder such officer in the discharge of his duties under this article.
Please be reminded and follow these ordinances to ensure the comfort level of all residents within the City of Chanhassen. Failure to comply with these may result in citations and/or fines. Thank You!
