Coyote Awareness

Like other suburbs, Chanhassen has experienced coyote sightings and related activity over the past few years. With the close proximity to large undeveloped tracts of land such as Lake Minnewashta Regional Park, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, and numerous city parks in Chanhassen, opportunistic coyotes have found locations to thrive. Subsequently, it is possible that you may spot a coyote in Chanhassen.

Coyotes are scavengers and opportunistic hunters that will roam wherever necessary to find food. Residents should be aware that coyotes will prey on many types of mammals, including domestic pets of various sizes.

Although coyotes are a threat to domestic pets, they are not a threat to humans. In fact, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, there has never been a documented coyote attack on a human in Minnesota. Given these facts, Chanhassen Community Service Officers are encouraging citizens to take the following simple precautions to ensure the safety of their pets:

  • Do not leave pet food or garbage outside.
  • Do not intentionally feed coyotes.
  • Do not leave dogs or cats outside unattended for long periods of time.
  • Pets should be leashed when walking in any recreational area.
  • If confronted by a coyote, shouting or making some other loud noise should frighten away the animal.
Per local ordinances and state law, discharging a firearm or trapping an animal is prohibited.

At this time, the City of Chanhassen is currently addressing the increase of coyote inquiries by providing awareness and public education. If you have further questions please contact the Chanhassen Community Service Officers at 952-227-1607 or by email.
