Recreational Fires
Fire for cooking, ceremonial or recreational purposes do not require Minnesota D.N.R. or Chanhassen Fire Department permits. However, the material to be burned must be limited to a pile no larger than three feet in diameter and three feet high.
The following conditions must also be met:
- Burn only unpainted and untreated wood. Note: Coal or charcoal may be burned.
- Recreation fires shall not be conducted within 25 feet of a structure or combustible material unless contained in a barbecue pit. Conditions that could cause a fire to spread to within 25 feet of a structure shall be eliminated prior to ignition.
- Buckets, shovels or garden hoses shall be readily available for use at recreation fires.
- Recreation fires shall be constantly attended by a person knowledgeable in the use of fire extinguishing equipment required by these requirements. An attendant shall supervise a recreation fire until such fire has been extinguished.
- Any officer of the Chanhassen Fire Department, MN D.N.R., or Carver County Deputy Sheriff is authorized to require that recreational fires be immediately discontinued if such fires are determined to constitute a hazardous condition.
- Recreation fires are not allowed if a total burning ban is in effect.
- Wind speed and gusts can be no greater than 15 MPH.
- The prevailing winds must be away from nearby occupied buildings.
