Signs

The City of Chanhassen regulates signage throughout the community. The sign ordinance establishes standards to enhance the aesthetic environment and protect the safety of the residents. These standards permit businesses a reasonable and equitable opportunity to advertise their name and service while preserving civic beauty.

Permanent Signs
All permanent signage requires a permit. This includes wall, monument and pylon signs. In addition, any alterations, relocations, or reconstruction of an existing sign requires a new permit. The permit fee is $100.00. The fee for signs incorporating an Electronic Message Center is $300.00. Some of the ordinance requirements are as follows:
  • The size of sign is based on the zoning district.
  • All zoning districts permit monument signs. They must meet required setbacks.
  • Wall business signs are only permitted on a street frontage. The size is based on a precentage of the square footage of the leased wall space.
  • Signage must be individual dimensional letters; cabinet signs are not permitted.
  • Most retail and industrial parks have specific signage criteria (e.g. maximum of 2-foot individual dimensional letters; color specific).
  • Logos are limited to 30% of the sign area.
  • Signs can display the company name, company symbols, display messages (not more than 6 inches tall), pictorial presentations, illustrations, or decorations.

Sign Permit Application

  • Maximum size of portable signs and detached banners: 32 square feet and 6 feet in height
  • Maximum display period:
      Grand opening: 30 days
Other Occasion: 10 days (maximum of 4 times per year)
  • Inflatable advertising devices limited to 25 feet in height and a 7-day display period.
