Natural Resources
The City of Chanhassen recognizes the importance of its natural environment to the quality of life for its citizens and the need to protect and enhance these resources. As development places further pressures on the city’s resources, challenges and limitations will need to be met head-on with creativity and a commitment to a community privileged with environmental assets. (In Chanhassen, four large-scale features dominate the landscape. They include lakes, wetlands, creek and river corridors and tree cover. These areas contribute to the open spaces and rural flavor of the community.)
The City of Chanhassen has many programs and services to enhance and protect natural resources. Below are some examples.
Each year we celebrate Arbor Day with tree planting projects and park clean-ups.
This invasive species is commonly found in many of the wooded areas in Chanhassen. This City encourages residents to be educated about this woody plant and eradicate it where possible. The Minnesota DNR has an excellent publication about the plant and how to remove it.
Weed Wrench Available: The City has a weed wrench available for homeowners. The weed wrench is a manual tool that can be used for buckthorn removal.
The wrench is available for a three-day rental. A $150 deposit is required and will be returned when the wrench is checked back in. Call City Hall at 952-227-1100 to reserve the tool.

To access the hotline, call 952-227-1351 and follow the recorded instructions.
This invasive insect has been discovered in Minnesota, but no confirmed infestations have been reported in Carver County.
Annual awards are given to local residents, businesses and organizations who work to enhance the environment.
The Environmental Resources Specialist is also the city forester and can help you with your tree questions and problems.

The City’s Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program (SWPPP) is available HERE.
- Nondegradation Assessment
The City of Chanhassen is required to assess stormwater runoff volume, total suspended solids (TSS), and total phosphorous (TP) loading under current conditions and proposed 2020 conditions. This assessment will be used to develop an implementation plan so the three parameters will meet existing conditions from 1988. A public hearing was held on January 15, 2008.
Public plots are available at the Olson Community Gardens located on the corner of Kerber Boulevard and Santa Vera Drive.
Radon
Radon is an odorless, colorless, naturally occurring gas. Long-term exposure to it can cause lung cancer. The City offers home test kits for $4. They can be purchased at City Hall.

The City of Chanhassen is seeking volunteer groups to mark curbs near storm drains with the marker shown to the right.
These markers are placed to remind people that storm drains are for clean rain water only. It is a visual reminder that we can help keep our lakes, creeks and rivers clean.
The City of Chanhassen offers a water conservation education and incentive program for Chanhassen residents. Current, upcoming, and potential Water Wise programs, as well as tips for how you can conserve water are listed here.
