Citizen Assisted Monitoring Program (CAMP)
Lake Water Quality Data

The City of Chanhassen has partnered with the Metropolitan Council to participate in its Citizen Assisted Monitoring Program, or 'CAMP'. CAMP volunteers collect surface water samples from Chanhassen Lakes. The samples are then sent to the Metropolitan Council to be analyzed for total phosphorus (TP), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), and chlorophyll-a (CLA). In addition, they measure surface water transparency using a secchi disc, water temperature, and record perceptions such as weather conditions. Samples are taken biweekly from April through October (fourteen sampling dates) and are sampled at the lake's deepest open-water location.

Most of this data collection effort concentrates on assessment of lake eutrophication. Eutrophication is the process of plant growth, particularly algae stimulated by nutrient enrichment. Excessive nutrients in our lakes can cause accelerated eutrophication, and lead to detrimental affects such as algae blooms and fish kills. Excessive nutrient levels in lakes are caused by increased runoff from development that carries with it fertilizer from yards and agricultural fields, grass clippings, leaves, and other pollutants. Eutrophication is one of the largest water quality concerns in the Metropolitan Area.

The City of Chanhassen would like to thank its current citizen monitors! These residents take samples from Lotus Lake, Lake Riley, Lake St. Joe, Lake Susan, Lake Minnewashta and Lake Lucy. Citizen monitors are still needed for Christmas Lake and Lake Ann. If you would like to become a citizen monitor, please contact Krista Spreiter, Natural Resources Technician at 952-227-1173 or via rmail at: kspreiter@ci.chanhassen.mn.us. For additional Lake Water Quality Data, as well as complete lake reports, visit the Metropolitan Council's Environmental Information Management System (EIMS) via their website at: http://es.metc.state.mn.us/eims/lakes/index.asp.
