2011 Environmental Excellence Awards
Environmental Excellence Awards are provided by the City of Chanhassen to recognize environmental improvements and encourage environmental stewardship throughout the community. These awards are designed not only to recognize achievement, but also to communicate new ideas and help educate the members of the Chanhassen community.
Program Guidelines
Environmental Excellence Awards will be presented for each of the following categories:
- Residential (individual or neighborhoods)
- Business or Commercial
- Community or Educational Groups, Schools
All entries submitted or nominated must meet the following criteria:
- Activities and environmental benefits must occur within the city limits.
- Projects are to be undertaken during the current year.
- If you are in Category B, please certify compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
Application Procedures
- Complete the application form and attach any supporting documentation.
- Certify compliance if you are in Category B and sign appropriate line on application form.
- Applications are due by October 31, 2011.
- Mail the completed application materials to:

Environmental Excellence Award Category Information
Category A: Residential (individual or neighborhoods)
Eligible Sample Activities
- Landscaping or Land Management
Examples: Using landscape plantings to reduce energy use (such as windbreaks, planting trees on east and west sides of home, etc.), creating habitat through plantings, using native plants, reducing the use of phosphorous, fertilizers and pesticides, etc.
- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Examples: Home composting or vermiculture, energy efficiency, water conservation, etc.
- Stewardship
Examples: Volunteering on behalf of the environment, environmental advocacy, educational programs, etc.
- Other
Example: Innovative solutions to environmental problems.
Category B: Business or Commercial
Eligible Sample Activities:
- Landscaping or Land Management
Examples: Using landscape plantings to reduce energy use (such as windbreaks, planting trees on east and west sides of home, etc.); creating habitat through plantings; using native plants; reducing the use of phosphorous, fertilizers and pesticides; preservation of wetlands, forests or open spaces; etc.
- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Examples: Reducing waste on supplier end, documented recycling program, building reusability into products, minimizing packaging, etc.
- Stewardship
Examples: Employee involvement in environmental efforts, environmental leadership in the community, etc.
- Other
Examples: Innovative solutions for environmental problems.
Category C: Community Groups and Organizations, Schools
Eligible Activities: Sub-categories
- Landscaping or Land Management
Examples: Using landscape plantings to reduce energy use (such as windbreaks, planting trees on east and west sides of home, etc.); creating habitat through plantings; using native plants; erosion and sediment control; preservation of wetlands, forests or open spaces, etc.
- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Examples: Implementing an expanded or new recycling program, purchasing and use of recycling content products, reducing the use of toxic or hazardous cleaning supplies, etc.
- Stewardship
Examples: Volunteering on behalf of the environment, environmental advocacy, educational programs, etc.
- Other
Examples: Innovative solutions to environmental problems.
