Forestry
In Chanhassen, the city forester is known as the Environmental Resources Specialist. Jill Sinclair is a trained forester, who can inspect your trees, shrubs and plants for disease or insect problems, give pruning advice, make tree and plant selection recommendations, teach you proper planting and pruning techniques, and answer any other landscaping questions. Jill also administrates the Arbor Day Tree Planting Event and inspection of landscaping requirements for new homes. She can be reached at 952-227-1133 or jsinclair@ci.chanhassen.mn.us.
Diseased Trees
Two well-known diseases continue to be a threat in the City. Oak wilt and Dutch elm disease are still infecting oaks and elms throughout the city. While not common or prevalent in Chanhassen, oak wilt has been diagnosed on several trees in various locations. Watch your oaks each summer for branches full of dead, brown leaves and/or a rapid decline in health. Contact the Environmental Resources Specialist as soon as possible to confirm the problem. Dutch elm disease is a very common problem throughout the city each year. Tell-tale signs of the disease include “flagging,” where an entire branch of leaves will turn yellow and then brown creating a sort of “warning flag” in the tree canopy. According to city ordinance, the property owner must remove infected trees within 20 days of notification by the city. The disease can be controlled through proper sanitation measures.
Landscape Escrows
Upon completion, every new house in the city is required to have a lawn and at least one deciduous tree in the front yard. If this has not been completed by the time the house is ready for occupancy, a cash escrow is collected by the city as insurance that the landscaping will be done. The deadline for completion is three months from the time the Certificate of Occupancy (CO) is issued or July 1 of the following year if the CO is issued between October 1 and May 1. To schedule an inspection of your landscape, or for more information, please contact Jill Sinclair by calling 952-227-1133 or e-mailing her at jsinclair@ci.chanhassen.mn.us.
