  3. 2019 Community Clean-Up for Water Quality

October 26, 2019, 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM @ Volunteers are requested to meet in the parking lot outside of the Senior Center at City Hall promptly at 9:30am. Clean-up sites will be assigned and supplies will be distributed, as well as instructions.

Chanhassen residents and service groups/organizations are invited to volunteer to assist with cleaning up organic debris in our streets. Volunteers will rake, sweep or shovel leaves, dirt, and debris along curbs and streets at designated locations throughout the city. Why? Phosphorus is a major source of water pollution that causes excessive growth of algae and depletes oxygen needed for fish and native plants. Impervious surfaces, such as driveways, streets, and parking lots provide a pathway for phosphorus to get to local lakes, rivers, and streams. Phosphorus on streets comes from decaying organic matter such as leaves, branches, and loose dirt. Fall is one of the peak periods for the introduction of phosphorous from paved surfaces into local waters. What to bring? Brooms, shovels, rakes and wagons or wheelbarrows to haul any large debris. What is provided? Lawn and leaf bags, trash bags, gloves, and safety vests.
